ITIA Certified Translator Print E-mail

The Irish Translators' and Interpreters' Association, as the only professional body representing translators in Ireland, has introduced a procedure that allows Professional Members of the ITIA to put themselves forward for assessment to achieve 'ITIA Certified Translator' status.

The aim of the ITIA in offering its members 'ITIA Certified Translator' status is to achieve formal recognition for the profession and the status of a Certified Translator from the Irish legal system, government departments, state institutions and the business community, and to maintain the standards of professional excellence through continuing professional development programmes.

Who can become a Certified Translator?

A Certified Translator in Ireland is a person who has fulfilled all the certification criteria set by the Certification sub-committee of the Irish Translators' and Interpreters' Association and whose main area of work covers the translation of legal and official documentation that requires certification.

The main requirements are: Professional Membership of the ITIA and a successful result in two test translations (for further details see 'application form for Certified Translator status and 'Questions and Answers'). A translator who certifies to the accuracy of the translation in relation to an original document in another language carries full responsibility for making such a statement and, therefore, great care and attention is always required.

If a translator is found to have wilfully mistranslated or inaccurately translated a text, such translator may be charged with negligence, perjury or even with contempt of court.
